Special provisions
SP 239
Batteries or cells shall not contain dangerous substances other than sodium, sulphur or sodium compounds (e.g. sodium polysulphides and sodium tetrachloroaluminate). Batteries or cells shall not be offered for carriage at a temperature such that liquid elemental sodium is present in the battery or cell unless approved and under the conditions established by the competent authority of the country of origin. If the country of origin is not a Contracting Party to ADR, the approval and conditions of carriage shall be recognized by the competent authority of the first country Contracting Party to ADR reached by the consignment. Cells shall consist of hermetically sealed metal casings which fully enclose the dangerous substances and which are so constructed and closed as to prevent the release of the dangerous substances under normal conditions of carriage. Batteries shall consist of cells secured within and fully enclosed by a metal casing so constructed and closed as to prevent the release of the dangerous substances under normal conditions of carriage.

Batteries need not be individually marked and labelled if the pallet bears the appropriate mark and label.
SP 401
Sodium ion cells and batteries with organic electrolyte shall be carried as UN No. 3551 or 3552, as appropriate. Sodium ion cells and batteries with aqueous alkali electrolyte shall be carried as UN No. 2795. Batteries containing metallic sodium or sodium alloy shall be carried as UN No. 3292.
